What is a Cab Card In Trucking
If you’re a commercial trucker driving across state lines, your cab card is one of the most important documents you carry. Issued as part of IRP registration (International Registration Plan), this card serves as proof that your vehicle is properly registered and allowed to operate in multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
The IRP number on the cab car is usually located near the top of the card, close to your base jurisdiction, account number, and fleet number. Look for a label that says “IRP Account Number” or “IRP No.”- that’s the one you’ll need.
What Is a Cab Card?
A cab card is an official document issued after your vehicle is registered under the IRP. It shows that your truck has been apportioned - meaning it's been approved to operate in multiple jurisdictions (states or provinces), and registration fees have been fairly divided based on the miles you run in each area.
Your cab card will include:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
- Base Jurisdiction (home state)
- IRP Account Number
- IRP Number
- Fleet Number
- A list of jurisdictions where the vehicle is authorized to operate, along with registered weights in each
Keep It With You
By law, the cab card must be kept in the truck at all times while operating. Most drivers store it in a glove compartment, permit binder, or mounted document holder within easy reach during inspections. Failing to carry it can lead to fines or even being pulled off the road.
Is a Cab Card the Same as a Registration?
Yes and no - it’s part of your IRP registration, but it’s not the same as a standard in-state vehicle registration.
A regular registration only covers a vehicle for operation within one state. But if you haul across state lines, that’s not enough. That’s where the IRP and the cab card come in. Your cab card acts as multi-jurisdictional registration, showing that your vehicle is properly apportioned for interstate travel.
How Is the Cab Card Issued?
After you apply for IRP registration or submit a renewal, your state’s IRP office reviews your documents, processes fees, and then issues your cab card. You’ll get one for each truck in your fleet. In some states, you’ll also be given the option to download an electronic cab card, which is valid as long as it’s accessible and can be shown during a roadside check.
How to Renew a Cab Card
Just like your IRP registration, your cab card must be renewed annually, and the exact deadline depends on your base jurisdiction:
- Iowa (IA): Renewals are accepted 60 days before the registration expiration month and must be received or postmarked by the last day of that month to avoid penalties. There's no grace period, and late filings incur a 5% penalty plus additional monthly charges
- Kansas (KS): Renewal notices are sent approximately 90 days before the fleet expiration date. You'll receive detailed instructions and forms in advance, and the renewal must be submitted on time to prevent disruptions
Follow these steps to renew your cab card:
- Log into your state IRP portal (or work with a registration service).
- Submit updated mileage and jurisdiction info.
- Pay any fees due.
- Wait for processing (typically a few days to a few weeks).
- Receive your new cab card by mail or download it electronically if your state supports digital documents.
It’s best to begin the renewal process 30 to 60 days before your current registration expires. Waiting too long may risk operating with expired credentials - something enforcement officers don’t take lightly.
Once your renewal is complete, you’ll receive a new cab card with updated dates and weight info. Replace your old one immediately to stay compliant.
