Indiana Apportioned License Plate

Indiana IRP Registration

If you're a trucker operating across state lines, getting an Indiana apportioned license plate is more than just a formality - it's a legal requirement under the International Registration Plan (IRP). The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement between 59 jurisdictions including the continental States of the USA (AKA the lower 48), the District of Columbia, and the 10 Provinces of Canada. This system allows commercial vehicles to operate in multiple states without the need for separate registrations in each jurisdiction. Instead, you register in your home state (like Indiana), and your registration fees are apportioned based on miles traveled in each state.

IRP Plates Indiana

As a trucker who drives across states - or even just crossing your base jurisdiction state line - you need IRP registration. To obtain an apportioned plate in Indiana, you must register your vehicle through the IRP program managed by the Indiana Department of Revenue Motor Carrier Services (MCS).

IRP plates eliminate the hassle of registering your vehicle in multiple states. Instead, you register once in Indiana and pay fees based on the mileage you travel in each state. These fees are then distributed to the appropriate jurisdictions.

Fees are calculated based on:

  • Weight of your vehicle
  • Jurisdictions traveled
  • Miles driven per jurisdiction

By participating in the IRP, you're making sure that each state you operate in gets its fair share of road use taxes and more importantly, you’re operating legally and efficiently.

Who Needs It?

You must register under IRP and get an apportioned plate if your vehicle meets any of the following:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 26,000 pounds
  • Has three or more axles, regardless of weight
  • Is used in combination (like a truck and trailer) and the combined weight is over 26,000 pounds
  • Operates in two or more states or jurisdictions

If your vehicle operates only within Indiana like if you only haul between Gas City and Santa Claus, for instance, or within any other areas of Indiana, you’re not required to enroll.

Indiana Apportioned Plate Renewal

IRP registration is not a one-time deal, it must be renewed annually to remain valid. Your renewal due date is listed right on your cab card, so it’s important to keep track of it and start the process early to avoid any penalties or delays.
