Welcome to Alabama IRP Registration IRP Registration Services!

IRP Alabama

Let’s say you run trucks out of Alabama. The moment your routes cross into another state, you're in interstate territory and that’s where IRP registration becomes essential. Alabama is part of the International Registration Plan, a system that allows you to register your vehicles in your home state and operate legally across all participating jurisdictions. It simplifies the process by spreading registration fees based on the miles driven in each state.

In Alabama, IRP is handled by the Alabama Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle Division. Whether you’re an owner-operator or managing a growing fleet, IRP keeps your interstate operations legal and efficient.

How to Get an IRP Registration in Alabama

Alabama’s used the MVTRIP portal for IRP since July 2020. It’s the place to register or renew your credentials, but you’ll need to have your ducks in a row. Here’s what they typically request:

  • Proof you’re based in Alabama (a business address or ID)
  • Your USDOT number
  • Your FEIN (Business EIN)
  • Vehicle title or lease documents
  • Proof of current insurance
  • Form 2290 if the vehicle falls under heavy-use tax
  • Mileage logs - estimated for new registrants, actual for renewals
Fees depend on your vehicle’s weight and how many miles you drive in each jurisdiction. That’s why an accurate trip log matters. Overestimating might cost you extra, and underestimating gets you in trouble during audits.

Many carriers skip the DMV line entirely by working with a trusted service. At IRP Registration Services, we handle everything: prepping forms, uploading files, paying fees, and getting your apportioned plate and cab card ready within a few business days. All you have to do is call us at (888) 202-4927 - we’ll walk you through it.

How to Renew Your IRP in Alabama

In Alabama IRP registration isn’t a one-and-done. IRP runs on an annual renewal cycle tied to your USDOT number - your renewal month pops up when you register. You’ll log into the Alabama MVTRIP system and submit:

    1. Actual, verifiable mileage by jurisdiction
    2. Updated insurance proof
    3. A new 2290 form, if needed
    4. Any title or lease updates

Skip the deadline, and you risk late fees or losing your apportioned tags. That’s why many Alabama based carriers leave renewals in expert hands. At our third-party services, we'll let you know when it’s due, gather your mileage, check your insurance, and file it all on schedule.

How to Apply for IFTA in Alabama

If you qualify for IRP, chances are you need IFTA too - the International Fuel Tax Agreement. This lets you report fuel taxes under a single system rather than filing state by state.

You’ll need IFTA license if your truck:

  • Has two axles and weighs over 26,000 lbs, or
  • Has three or more axles, or
  • Is part of a combo that tips over 26,000 lbs

With IFTA, you display decals on your truck and file fuel tax returns every quarter. Your license expires Dec. 31, and your reports tracking miles vs. fuel purchases - are due in April, July, October, and January. It’s a paper chase, but it pays off in smoother interstate operations.

We help Alabama carriers with both IRP and IFTA registration. One application, one team, one headache-free submission. Let us bundle it all together for you.

We do the behind-the-scenes work: forms, filings, renewals, while you focus on the road. Give us a ring (888) 202-4927 or start your application online. We handle compliance so you can stay in motion.
