Registration class is how your base jurisdiction categorises the vehicle and its use: tractor, straight truck, bus, tow unit, private or for-hire. The class determines which fee schedule applies and what the vehicle is permitted to do, so when the operation changes and the class does not, you are either overpaying or out of compliance.
The usual triggers are a change in use rather than a change in vehicle — a straight truck converted to a tractor, a unit moving from private carriage to for-hire, a day cab that starts pulling a different trailer type. Because class and registered weight together determine the apportioned amount, a class change often needs a weight change alongside it.
We review what you are actually hauling before recommending a class, file both changes together where one affects the other, and quote the difference in fees — in either direction — before anything is submitted.

- USDOT number
