Plates are the slowest credential to replace, because they are physically manufactured and posted. Most jurisdictions will issue a temporary registration or replacement receipt to carry until the new plate arrives, and that is the part of this filing that actually earns money.
What you need to supply depends on how the plate went missing. A stolen plate almost always requires a police report, which also protects you if the plate later turns up on another vehicle. A lost or damaged plate is normally covered by a signed affidavit describing what happened.
Many jurisdictions reissue the same plate number, which keeps your records clean and avoids a cascade of other updates. Stolen plates are the exception — those are usually retired and a new number assigned.
